Premier's Message

On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, I am pleased to welcome you to the 135th Anniversary celebrations of Chief Payepot's signing of Treaty Four with Queen Victoria.

Chief Payepot, a well known leader, diplomat, warrior and spiritualist, never gave up. He was peaceful in negotiations, but determined to have the best for his people. Believing treaties to be solemn commitments, he refused to waver from his treaty obligations. It is said of Chief Payepot that his actions showed courage and strength, and how a great leader should behave.

The world premier of Oscana, a multimedia symphony commissioned for the event, promises to be entertaining and educational. I believe this will be a memorable celebration, commensurate with the status and accomplishments of Chief Payepot.

This event serves as a reminder to all Saskatchewan citizens of the tremendous historical and current contributions of First Nations people to Saskatchewan and Canada. I would like to express my gratitude to the Chief Piapot Anniversary Celebration Committee members for organizing this special celebration.
